Three policemen attached to the Bariga Police Division, Lagos State, have been detained for allegedly chaining a suspect to a generator at the station.
Although the identities of the erring cops were not disclosed, they were said to be facing orderly room trial for the misconduct.
This is just as the state police command identified one Samson Agbetoye, aka Goldie, and Babatunde Saka, aka Anger, as the two principal suspects involved in the killing of Rasaq Bello, aka Hamburger, a former treasurer of the state Tricycle Operators Association, a branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
Hamburger was murdered in Sogunle, Oshodi, on May 29 after the council primaries of the All Progressives Congress in the area turned violent.
Suspected robbers were also paraded on Tuesday at the command headquarters in Ikeja along with arms and ammunition recovered from them.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the three policemen arrested the unidentified suspect on Sunday in the Bariga area. They reportedly found two Automated Teller Machine cards on him and alleged that one of the cards did not belong to him.
They took the man to the station and handcuffed him to a generator at a corner on the premises.
A source told our correspondent that after inspecting the premises and finding the suspect in chain, the Divisional Police Officer summoned the three policemen.
“They arrested the suspect for being in possession of two ATM cards, one of which does not belong to him. While trying to interrogate him, they became overzealous and handcuffed him to the generator.
“It was the DPO who caught them. They are facing necessary disciplinary action,” the source said.
The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the policemen would be sanctioned to serve as a deterrent to others.
He said, “The attention of the command has been drawn to the conduct of the policemen. They have been identified and are being taken through the normal disciplinary process.
“Also, two principal suspects, one Samson Agbetoye, aka Goldie, and Babatunde Saka, aka Anger, are in custody in connection with the murder of Rasaq Bello, aka Hamburger. The command has got to a reasonable point in the investigation and the suspects will be arraigned for murder.”
Owoseni stated that 53 suspected armed robbers and 12 cult members had been arrested during a series of police operations across the state.
The CP said the command was exploring technical and scientific means to unearth the Badoo gang, which had killed about 30 residents of Ikorodu.
Two members of a seven-man robbery gang were paraded for confessing to a highway robbery in the Ajangbadi area of the state.
One of them, 26-year-old Sodiq Yakubu, said they usually pretended as intending passengers on the road, adding that they struck as soon as bus drivers waited to pick them.
He said, “I am a panel beater. I am from Osun State. We are seven in our gang. We usually robbed commercial buses going to Mile 2. We would wait at Kasidi bus stop, Ajangbadi, as if we wanted to board a bus. As soon as a bus stops, one of us would point a gun at the driver, while others would be collecting money and phones from the passengers. We operated around 4am.
“I have gone for two operations. I got N15,000 in the first operation and N18,000 in the second. A friend had invited me on Sunday, July 9, to rob his boss who runs a lotto shop on Maxwell Street, Ajangbadi, when I was arrested.”
Yakubu’s accomplice, 22-year-old Saheed Aiyemojuba, an ex-convict, said he hooked up with the gang at a smoking joint in Okokomaiko.
“My role in the gang is to stay in the front of a bus and watch while others rob. I was arrested during my second operation with the gang in April 2017. I got N3,000 in the first operation. I was convicted in 2014 for stealing recharge cards.”
The Ogun State indigene said after he was released from the prison, his father bought a vehicle for him for commercial transport, adding that he sold the vehicle.
“I didn’t know what made me to go into robbery,” he added.
