Roads especially rural roads are very critical to the economic and social development of an area. The state of Osun being an agrarian state is made up of many rural areas with vast farmland which needs accessible roads to allow the farmers in such communities to transport their farm produce to nearby markets for sale.
It was therefore a huge respite to the government and the people of Osun when the state was chosen as one of the lucky states to benefit from the RAMP intervention through the World bank and the French Development Agency in the construction and rehabilitation of rural roads across the state so as to assist farmers in the transportation of their goods to the cities thereby boosting the economy of the state through farming.
Award of laudable project is a different thing, the inspection and monitoring of such projects to achieve maximum and desired results is another thing.
In a bid to ensure that the road projects are done to specification and standard, a World Bank Mission comprising of the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU), Federal Ministry of Finance as well as other stakeholders between April 1st and 4th visited the four Lots where 225km rural roads are being implemented across the state.
The inspection visit which took the world bank team four days led them to all the four lots in Iwo, Ife, and Ilesha which are all at different stages of completion.
The tour took the team to roads such as Agbowu/Ogbaagba - Idiroko-Eleru-Bode Osi-Aba Onile road. Bode-Osi township township - Asa junction, Dagbolu Ajagunlase, Eleke - Kanko, Agoro - Ikonifin, Ikonifin - Sade - ajagunlase, Pataara - Ileko-oba, Ileko- Oba -Odo omi all in lot 1.
Under lot 2, the trip took the team to Jagun Osi/Onikoko - Osi Sooko, Osi Sooko - Osi Ara, Osi Ara - Falana, Alogba(Gbengbeleku junction) Owode Amu, Owode Amu - Oyere Fadehan.
Day three of the trip saw the team inspecting roads such as: Shasha road (Lawoka junction) - Apope junction and the spur in (road 2) under lot 3 of the project.
The last day of the inspection took the team to Ilesa - Odogbo - Araromi Igbowiwi, Ilesa - ilo Olomo boundary, Ira - Ikeji-Ile - Arakeji, Ira township, Ikeji Ile township, Ira - Ikeji - ile - Ajebandele/Arinmo, Ira - Ikeji ile - oligeri - Iragbiji - Oniyo roads all in lot four.
Speaking during the tour, head of the World Bank mission Mr Tesfamichael Nahusenay who was also supported by the Senior Transport Specialist Engr. Olatunji Ahmed, hailed the level of work done so far in all the roads visited across the state, saying they have been seriously impressed with what they have seen.
The World Bank mission who took time to visit all the rural areas which the road leads to advised the contractors to ensure that the job is completed within the stipulated time and also to meet up with the required standard as stated in the terms of contract.
Mr Tesfamichael called on the contractors and consultants on the road projects to ensure that they consider the inhabitants of the communities in the area health issues, child abuse, H.I.V campaign, discipline of staff among others as it is usually common for workers of road construction companies to engage in illicit sexual affairs with teenage and underage girls in the host communities.
The world Bank team took time to particularly commend the reseltelement effort made by the contractors for residents whose house were affected as a result of the expansion of road at Gbengbeluku and Yinmi aba in lot 2 of the project, saying they were happy for efforts taken to build another house for those affected.
Another member of the team who is the Social Safeguard analyst of the team, Miss Ayoola Olufunmi stated that she is highly impressed by the environmental factors considered on the road construction.
