The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Fimihan Adeoye has said that police has commenced investigation on the explosion that occurred at the Grace Cooking Gas in Osogbo, capital of Osun State which claimed lives.
Speaking with Daily Trust in a telephone conversation at the weekend, the police boss said necessary steps have been taken to unravel the circumstances surrounding the bloody explosion at the gas station.
According to him, “We are investigating the incident. We want to be very sure of the true cause of the explosion. We cannot listen to speculations. We will brief you on the outcome of our findings as soon as the investigations are concluded.”
Meanwhile, the state government has also indicated interest in the matter and may set up a Coroner’s inquest to determine what really killed those that died in the gas station explosion.
Speaking with Daily Trust at the weekend, the Media Adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Sola Fasure said the speculation that a phone call caused the explosion was not reliable and cannot be tenable.
The Assistant Director of the Osun State Ambulance Service Bola Akinyemi and her driver were said to have been killed by the explosion while some other people sustained injury. Bola had gone to the gas station with her driver to refill her gas cylinder. Bola was buried during the weekend.
The manager of the gas station, Soji Babayemi said when Bola came to buy the gas, her car was parked at the designated car park and that the engine of the car was on and that the car glass was rolled up with the air conditioner running. He said the woman made a call and the next thing from the car was an explosion.
According to him, “The explosion stated from the car at the car park. It was just when the doors of the car was opened that the fire spread to a part of our station. The woman was actually engulfed in fire. So, the fire actually started from the car. We quickly shut down all the valves and we used our industrial fire extinguishers and water hydrants to stop the fire. None of our staff had any form of injury”.
