The Director of Media & Publicity, APC Benue State, Comrade Apeh Peterhot has said President Muhammadu Buhari's refusal to assent to Peace Corps of Nigeria establishment bill is a set up by his advisers to popularize Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his House of Reps counterpart, Yakubu Dogara if the duo opted to override President Buhari decision to jettisoning the bill
Apeh stated this in Abuja Tuesday afternoon while addressing early callers who flooded headquarters of the Peace Corps to sympathise with the organization over President Buhari's refusal to assent to the Peace Corps establishment bill
You may recall that the Nigerian senate had passed the Peace Corps establishment bill in 2017 and transmitted same to the president for assent on January 10th but the President had rejected the bill in a letter read on the floor of the House of Representatives by Speaker Dogara on Tuesday February 27
Apeh said if the duo of Senate President Saraki and his house of reps counterpart, Dogara decide to override the President's refusal to assent to the Peace Corps establishment bill, they (Saraki and Dogara) would become more popular in the eyes of Nigerians than Buhari because Peace Corps, according to Apeh, is seen as a panacea for our teeming jobless youths' restiveness.
Apeh while noting that the president's rejection of the Peace Corps establishment bill was shocking, maintained that assenting the bill would have coincided with the ruling APC's promise to create millions of jobs for Nigerians.
"I was shocked when I heard the news that President Muhammadu Buhari declined assenting to the establishment bill. The President must have been ill-advised by those against the Peace Corps. Establishing the Corps at this material time would have given the APC an edge in the forthcoming general elections because every Nigerian youth, especially those out of job sees Peace Corps as a great relief. We promised to create jobs and I think Peace Corps would have given us, the APC, that promise." He said
Apeh who said President Buhari's financial excuses was not enough reason to jettison such an ideal bill, noted that Peace Corps has no duplication of activities with any existing or extant security outfit. He said in the US, Malaysia, Canada and other developed countries around the world, Peace Corps and other organizations similar to this Peace Corps exist.
"It is not even under the ministry of interior that oversees activities of Nigerian paramilitary organisations. It is billed under the ministry of youths and sports but I wonder why our President cited duplication of activities with existing paramilitary organisations. In a country of about 200 million people laced with insecurity, organizations like Peace Corps should be a welcome idea" Apeh added.
