In order to avert epidemic diseases in Osun State, no fewer than fourteen (14) persons were arrested on Thursday at Testing Ground area of Osogbo, the State capital by officials of the Osun Waste Management Agency (OWMA) for allegedly dumping refuse on the roads and immediately charged to Court.
The affected individuals were brought to Magistrate Court 6 of the Magistrate Court in Osogbo before Magistrate Adebola Ajanaku.
The accused persons pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against them and were subsequently fined and seriously warned to desist from such act.
The Acting General Manager of OWMA, Sanitarian. Femi Henry Ogunbamiwo, while briefing newsmen on Friday in his office, said the affected people were arrested for violation of environmental laws of the state.
According to Ogunbamiwo, residents of the state have been warned against dumping waste on road sides, river channels and other unproved sites but some of them had remained adamant.
The OWMA boss, warned residents of the state against violating the state environmental sanitation law, saying that the law was enacted to ensure environmental sanitation and promote good health and well being of the entire people of the state.
Ogunbamiwo, who highly commended the incumbent administration in the state led by Governor Gboyega Oyetola for creating enabling environment for all and sundry, further urged the residents of the state to join hands with government and desist from indiscriminate refuse dumping so as to keep the state safe from epidemics, adding that, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness".
