The Speaker, Osun House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Timothy Owoeye have declared support for inclusion of Persons with Disability in governance and government policies.
The Speaker made this known to The Albino Foundation during the courtesy visit of the group to his office to canvass for the support of the legislative arm of the government on enhancing civic and political participation of Persons with Disability (PWDs) in Nigeria.
Rt. Hon Timothy Owoeye addressing the non governmental organization said that the government of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola is a Person With Disability friendly one, reiterated that the gesture will be improved upon to ensure the inclusion of Persons with Disability in all activities of the government of Osun.
He noted that domestication of the Persons with Disability Bill will be worked on to meet up with the Global template in trend, saying that inclusion of PWDs in social intervention programs, and availability of sign language interpreters in government programmes is supported.
According to the Speaker "Persons with Disability are human being and attention should be paid to them in Osun and Nigeria as a whole".
"Persons with Disability have roles and what they can contribute to the society, they have power to vote and to voice their demands as citizens of the state and country respectively- the Osun Speaker stated.
Earlier in his remarks TAF Osun EU SDGN project Supervisor for Osun and Ekiti state, Ogunbiyitan Kehinde said the organization is on advocacy campaign to ensure that Persons with Disability are given attention and included in governance since they are stakeholders during election.
He added that this category of persons according to World Health Organization statistics are about 20million from population of about140 millions of people in Nigeria, hence the call for their inclusion.
Mr Kehinde Ogunbiyitan appreciated Osun Governor, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola for his numerous Disability friendly programs and policies in the state, such as Free healthcare services through the enrollment of Persons with disabilities in all local governments across the state into Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS), inclusion of Persons with disabilities in all government social protection interventions in the state, as well as inclusion of Persons with disabilities in the ongoing teaching recruitment exercise in the state.
He also commended the recent appointment of Mr Onitiju Kehinde as SSA on Disability Matters to the Hon. Speaker, Osun House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye, among others.
Speaking further, Ogunbiyitan said that Domestication of the Persons with Disability Bill will improve their lives since they have a right to be included in governance and it is part of the responsibility of governments to give them an enabling environment for inclusion.
Others at the courtesy visit include Adebayo Muritala, Olayinka Temitope, Adekunle Ajibade: a visually impaired, Mathew Idowu: Sign interpreter, Sanusi Taiwo Muibat, Abdullahi Funmilayo - TAF Osun EU -SDGN Project lead, and Lukman Nafiu Adewale - TAF EU-SDGN Project Osun project Admin/Account officer.
