The Chairman of the Osun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sunday Bisi, has initiated a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Osogbo to halt what he claims is an illegal arrest attempt by the Nigeria Police.
In his legal filing, Bisi argues that the proposed arrest infringes upon his basic rights to personal freedom and unrestricted movement.
The Osun PDP Chairman further characterizes the move as a misuse of the authority granted to the police and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The suit contends that “the IGP’s intention to detain the Osun PDP leader is a scheme to harass and penalize him for challenging the IGP’s allegedly biased actions against the PDP amid the current political conflict in the state, and for rallying his party and its members to take part in the recently held local government election in Osun State, despite the IGP’s security recommendation to halt the ultimately peaceful vote.”
The elections went ahead despite the IGP’s security caution, which Bisi asserts was meant to undermine judicial decisions requiring the polls to proceed.
He emphasized that both the Court of Appeal and the Osun State High Court had previously mandated the elections to address vacant council positions.
Bisi explained that his choice to adhere to the court directives instead of the IGP’s advice resulted in the tranquil execution of the elections, disproving the IGP’s concerns and purportedly triggering the arrest scheme.
The PDP chairman is seeking a court order to bar the IGP and his representatives from carrying out the alleged arrest, maintaining that it is driven by political motives and lacks justification.
