The lawmaker representing Atakunmosa East and West State Constituency, Hon. Sanmi Areoye has strongly condemned and expressed deep concern over the alleged unlawful arrest of members and leaders of the Accord political family across Osun State.
Speaking with journalists, Hon. Areoye alleged that few hours ago the Executive Chairman of Atakunmosa West Local Government, Hon. Ajibola Dada was arrested at his residence without prior invitation. He also alleged that security operatives unlawfully invaded the residence of the Executive Chairman of Ilesa East Local Government, Hon. Taiwo Ilesanmi where the house was reportedly ransacked, although Hon. Ilesanmi was not at home at the time.
The lawmaker further alleged that those responsible for the arrest of Hon. Dada and the invasion of Hon. Ilesanmi's residence are also planning to arrest him.
Hon. Areoye expressed concern over what he described as the use of security agencies as instruments of intimidation and harassment against innocent, law abiding citizens for political purposes. He questioned why politicians would resort to such measures instead of allowing democracy to thrive through peaceful and lawful engagement.
He therefore called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tunde Disu to call officers under his command to order, ensure they remain neutral in political matters and discharge their constitutional duties with professionalism and fairness.
While emphasizing that as a lawmaker,he does not support any act capable of disrupting public peace, law and order, Hon. Areoye urged the Osun State Police Command to immediately halt what he described as the illegal arrest and harassment of Accord members and leaders across the State.
He concluded by reaffirming the determination of the people, saying:
"Let me unequivocally reiterate that no amount of intimidation or public harassment can prevent the people of Osun State from voting to re-elect Governor Ademola Adeleke."
