The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year's Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration in commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the Minister congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the world as they prepare to celebrate the occasion.
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the period to reflect on the teachings and exemplary life of Prophet Muhammad, particularly his virtues of compassion, humility, peaceful coexistence and service to humanity.
He noted that the values promoted by the Prophet remain important to Nigeria's quest for peace, unity and national cohesion.
“Every Eid-ul-Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the Minister said.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The Minister also called on Nigerians to pray for continued peace, unity and progress in the country, stressing that the responsibility of building a peaceful and united nation rests on all citizens.
He urged Muslims and other Nigerians observing the celebration to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly, while showing respect and tolerance for people of different religious and cultural backgrounds.
Tunji-Ojo further assured Nigerians of the Federal Government's commitment to protecting lives and property across the country.
He wished Muslim faithful a joyful, peaceful and fulfilling Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration.
Eid-ul-Mawlid is observed annually by Muslims around the world to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad. The occasion is usually marked with prayers, lectures, religious gatherings and reflections on the Prophet's teachings and way of life.
With the declaration, government offices and other institutions covered by the public holiday arrangement are expected to observe Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a work-free day.
