Businesses that use WhatsApp to communicate with their customers at scale will soon have to pay for some of the messages they send on the platform.
Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, is set to introduce charges for certain business messages from October 1, 2026, as part of a fresh adjustment to its WhatsApp Business Platform pricing structure.
The new policy will apply mainly to businesses using the official WhatsApp Business Platform, previously known as the WhatsApp Business API. The service is widely used by organisations that handle large volumes of customer conversations.
Banks, fintech companies, telecommunications firms, online retailers, logistics operators and other major businesses that use WhatsApp for customer support and transaction-related notifications are among those likely to be affected.
However, the new charges will not apply to ordinary WhatsApp users, and most small businesses using the regular WhatsApp Business application on their mobile phones are also not expected to be affected.
What is changing?
Under the existing arrangement, when a customer contacts a business on WhatsApp, a 24-hour customer service window is opened. Businesses can communicate with the customer within that period under specific messaging rules.
Some service and utility messages have previously been provided without a Meta messaging charge.
That arrangement is set to change on October 1.
According to Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform documentation, businesses will begin paying a fee for each service message sent, including messages delivered within an active 24-hour customer service window.
Meta also said qualifying utility messages sent in response to customers during the 24-hour window will become chargeable.
Service and utility messages can cover a range of customer interactions, including payment confirmations, order information, delivery updates and other transaction-related communications.
Meta explained that service messages had not attracted charges since November 1, 2024, while utility messages sent within an open customer service window had been free since July 1, 2025.
Businesses must prepare payment methods
Companies that use the WhatsApp Business Platform have also been advised to ensure that a valid payment method is linked to their accounts before the new pricing takes effect.
Meta warned that businesses and Solution Providers without a payment method on file by September 30, 2026, could have their service messages stopped once the new charges take effect on October 1.
How much will Nigerian businesses pay?
For businesses in Nigeria, a chargeable service or utility message is expected to cost approximately $0.0101 per message.
Using an exchange rate of about ₦1,340 to $1, the amount is roughly ₦14 per message.
Marketing messages will attract a higher fee, estimated at around $0.062 per message, which translates to approximately ₦84 at the same exchange rate.
The figures represent Meta's messaging charges only. Businesses that use third-party providers or WhatsApp Business Solution Providers may have to pay additional fees to those providers.
Large-volume messaging could become expensive
Although the charge on an individual message may appear small, businesses handling hundreds of thousands or millions of customer messages could see a substantial increase in their communication expenses.
For instance, a Nigerian fintech sending 500,000 chargeable service or utility messages would pay approximately $5,050 in Meta messaging fees.
At an exchange rate of ₦1,340 to the dollar, that would amount to roughly ₦6.8 million, excluding any additional fees charged by third-party service providers.
The financial impact could therefore be significant for companies that depend heavily on WhatsApp to communicate with large numbers of customers every month.
Nigerian businesses likely to feel the impact
WhatsApp has become an important customer communication channel for businesses in Nigeria.
Banks and fintech companies use the platform for customer support, payment alerts and other transaction-related communications. E-commerce companies, retailers and logistics firms also rely on WhatsApp for order confirmations, delivery notifications and customer service.
The new pricing structure means companies that have built their operations around high-volume WhatsApp messaging may need to review their communication budgets ahead of October.
The latest move is part of Meta's broader changes to the way businesses are charged for messaging on WhatsApp.
From October 1, 2026, service messages and qualifying utility messages that were previously free under certain conditions will attract per-message charges on the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Businesses that rely heavily on the platform are therefore expected to begin making adjustments before the new pricing system takes effect.
