The Osun State Government has warned individuals and groups against any attempt to disrupt public peace in the state, stressing that the period following the governorship election should be dedicated to reconciliation, healing and peace-building.
The government said Osun must move beyond the tensions and violence recorded during the pre-election period and focus on restoring peaceful coexistence among residents.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, expressed condolences to victims of the pre-election tensions and violence, calling on political actors and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at healing the state.
Alimi said the government was concerned about reports of disruptions in some parts of the state shortly after the election and urged residents to embrace peace and allow the restoration of law-based interactions across all sectors of society.
The state government said it was particularly disturbed by reports of alleged plans by some stakeholders to trigger fresh crises across local government councils and motor parks in the state.
According to the statement, any such plan should be stopped immediately in the interest of public peace and development.
"Osun needs peace for development, not violence in politics," the government said.
The government noted that the election had been concluded and called on all parties to accept the outcome and pursue a peaceful path forward.
It added that the President and the Governor had engaged on the need for a peaceful way forward, warning that any attempt to return the state to violence would be against efforts to maintain peace and uphold the rule of law.
The government also called on security agencies to ensure the rule of law prevails, including addressing issues surrounding political detainees and allegations of partisan policing, particularly in matters relating to local government administration and motor park management.
Alimi urged political leaders and stakeholders to be cautious in their statements and actions, insisting that Osun should now focus on healing and rebuilding.
"We call on all political actors to speak and act peacefully. Osun should be in a period of healing and building. We must not allow a relapse into the pre-election era of killings and violence," the statement added.
The Osun State Government appealed to all residents to put the interest of the state above political differences and work together to sustain peace, unity and development.
Signed:
Oluomo Kolapo Alimi
Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment
