The Osun State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the attack on police officers at Ikire, Osun State, which left two passers-by dead and three policemen injured.
The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Umar Zungura, disclosed this on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press briefing on the progress of the investigation into the incident.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Monday, August 24, when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ikire and his men responded to a distress call at the Naira & Kobo area of the town.
The Command said that upon arrival, the officers were confronted by about 30 armed hoodlums who allegedly attacked the policemen and forcefully snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the officers.
The police said one of the hoodlums, identified as “Ayewo”, allegedly used the stolen rifle to shoot sporadically, hitting three policemen and two passers-by.
The two passers-by later died from injuries sustained during the incident, while the injured policemen were taken to a hospital for medical treatment. The hoodlums reportedly escaped with the police rifle.
The Command said that following credible intelligence and technical analysis of information gathered during the investigation, its operatives arrested four suspects on Wednesday, August 26.
The suspects were identified as 21-year-old Sikiru Ademola Adedeji; 21-year-old Olalere Taiwo; 26-year-old Olalere Ademola; and 20-year-old Bankole Abiodun.
One cutlass-like object was also recovered from the suspects.
The police said preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspects allegedly confessed to being political thugs, adding that their faction is reportedly headed by a man known as Ayewo.
According to the Command, the suspects identified Ayewo as the person who allegedly fired the snatched AK-47 rifle during the attack.
The police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend Ayewo and other suspects still at large.
CP Zungura commended the police operatives involved in the investigation for what he described as their professionalism, dedication and effective use of intelligence and technical capabilities in tracking down the suspects.
The Commissioner assured residents that the investigation would continue and that anyone found to have participated in or contributed to the offence would be made to face the full weight of the law.
He also appealed to members of the public to provide the police with credible and timely information that could assist in preventing crime and apprehending suspected criminals.
The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and security across Osun State.
